As an Anime fan, I find that different characters are essential. Also, I like different genres. These three characters are different as night and day as well as the anime genres.
Escaflowne (es-cah-flow-nay) is from the 90s. It's about a girl from our world that gets transported to Gaea (guy-yah), a world of dragons, humanoid species, and mechas called Guymelefs (guy-mel-ef).
Allen Schezar is a gentleman with great secrets as well as a soft spot for protecting the "damsel in distress." He is also a ladies man as he sort of hits on the female main character, Hitomi.
He is one of the Knights of Caeli, an elite group of swordsmen from Asturia. His past is checkered with bitterness and death stemming from his father's fascination with the Mystic Valley and Atlantis.

Asuna Yūki comes from the Anime Sword Art Online. It takes place in near-future Japan where full-dive virtual reality is possible. The game, Sword Art Online (SAO), premieres as the first VRMMORPG of its kind. 10,000 players enter the game world of Aincrad (eye,n-krad) on the first day. Soon they discover they are trapped and that if they die in-game they die in real life.
Asuna is not a damsel. She is (excuse the cursing) a bad ass bitch with a blade. She becomes one of the strongest players in the game and in her guild Knights of the Blood. Her moniker is "Lightning Flash" because she wields her rapier in a swift and deadly fashion.
As the game progresses, her softer side is shown when she and Kirito form a relationship and adopt an NPC AI called Yui.

Alucard has been one of my absolute favorite characters since I first watched Hellsing. This anime is a strange combination of Horror and Comedy. It comes in two incarnations Hellsing and the newer Hellsing Ultimate.
There is no way to describe him other than he's crazy as all eff, seriously deranged, and psychotic to boot. He has a tendency to go overboard on his enemies in a fight.
As an ageless creature, Alucard is the ultimate vampire. He is all powerful and very bored. His ennui leads him to turn Seras Victoria, a police woman, into a vampire.
He works for Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, a woman that takes no sh*t from anyone but deals a great deal onto her enemies. She runs the Hellsing Organization, which is responsible to protect England from vampires bent on destruction.
His archenemy is the Paladin Alexander Anderson who works for Iscariot (Vatican Section XIII) a top secret section of the Vatican. He is as insane as Alucard.

I've watched little anime in my time (I think I rented a couple of "Ranma 1/2" videos years ago, and was totally confused) but it looks interesting. Good start to the Challenge!

Ranma is definitely easy to get lost on. Boys that turn into girls, dads turning into pandas, and other cursed characters turning into various creatures. Rumiko Takahashi is fun that way. She is also the beloved creator of Inuyasha, which a character will make an appearance later in the alphabet.
DeleteArgh, I love Sword Art Online!
ReplyDeleteSuch a good show! Have you played the game too?
Escaflowne also sounds really interesting to me. I might have to check that one out too!
Believe In Fairy Stories - Theme: Folklore & Fairy Tales
I have not played the games for Sao, but I'm not much of a gamer.
DeleteYou're in luck because FUNIMATION has reissued escaflowne in video form. It now has two English dubs. I'm partial to the old dub because of the voices of folken and Allen are so yummy. But you may like the new dub.
Thanks for stopping by!
What a rum collection of characters. I know practically nothing about anime but it definitely sounds colourful. Looking forward to more!
ReplyDeleteIt is very colorful. From cutesy to pornographic and from action to horror, anime runs the complete gambit of genres and sub-genres. It can get inspiration from mythology to original manga(graphic novels). It's an amazing art form.
DeleteI love Sword Art Online - Asuna is a great character. I have not come across the other two yet... looks like I'll be building up a list of anime to watch following your challenge.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find some that you like Since i am pretty eclectic in my tastes.
DeleteInsane vampires and kick-ass swordswomen - an interesting set of characters :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,

If it's interesting now then it will get even more so and weirder too.
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
What I know about anime would fit into a mustard seed. Your post was definitely educational. They all sound sharp - I liked Asuna the best!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting.
Have a great challenge,

Thanks for stopping by. I didn't know much about anime either, but I learned as I developed a taste for manga and anime as a teen.
DeleteI totally dig the idea of an arch-enemy named Paladin who works at the Vatican. That's pretty badass. ;)
ReplyDeleteMagical and Medicinal Herbs: Ash
Yeah Alexander is a neat character. He's totally as screwy as Alucard and just as freaky. He almost made my A list too, but I wanted to keep them pretty short this year,
DeleteI love Asuna! :) Sword Art Online gets a lot of bad rep, mostly because people love to compare it to Log Horizon (which I also love), but I think it's apples and oranges. I thought SAO was awesome, and also very pretty to look at. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Multicolored Diary: WTF - Weird Things in Folktales
I don't know which was written in light novel first, but I love both Sao and log horizon. You may even see a log horizon character soon. Hint hint. I watched Sao Ordinal Scale and you will LOVE it. It was stunning! And Sao is getting a third season!!!! Fangirling hardcore here!!
ReplyDeleteWith as much as I love vampires, I have yet to watch Hellsing. I love Escalowne though. It's a great series and the movie wasn't bad either. I have the soundtrack somewhere too.

You have the ost! I am so jealous right now! Escaflowne X was one of my first animes. It came on Fox Saturday morning but was quickly canceled. Sigh. I found it on vhs and bought them. Funimation has reissued it on bluray.
DeleteHellsing is definitely foul-mouthed and dark. Ultimate follows the manga better. Love them both.
Escaflowne is one of the animes I have missed - although I keep thinking I really should watch it.
ReplyDeleteHelsing on the other hand, I love. You have made me want to watch it all over again :) Animes like their bat-shit protagonists, don't they? :)
Tasha
Tasha's Thinkings - Shapeshifters and Werewolves
Yeah but he's still hot because of it. Ultimate is fun too. I love the scene in the museum where seras total has visitors following her around to keep Alucard and Alexander from going psycho in public. It was a gas.
DeleteI don't know anything about anime, but Hellsing sounds like something I'd like to check out. Horror & comedy? Awesome!
ReplyDeleteLisa / Tales from the Love Shaque
as long as you don't mind potty mouth and gore. either hellsing is not for the faint of heart.
DeleteAnd of course, "Alucard" is "Dracula" spelled backwards. Cute.
ReplyDeleteI missed everyone's A post on Saturday. Now I'm trying to read two posts today for each blog I follow that's participating in the A-Z!
very cool. you caught on to the spelling. :D
DeleteI've done that more than once. it's a pain to catch up, but i did it.
I don't know much about anime, but your description of Alucard left me curious. A vampire with ennui;I love it. I also really like the design and presentation of your blog. Looks like you put a lot of time into it, or are just really smart!
ReplyDeletehe loves a good fight to the death, but most of his skills are put to waste because he just comes across medicore enemies. He wants a challenge and to stave off his boredom he decides to turn seras. of course, he did shoot her first to get to the vampire holding her hostage. he did give her the choice to die or turn.
